In what could be described as a major feat in the medical profession, the federal medical center Jabi Abuja has commenced open heart surgery as four patients were successful operated upon on Friday.
The surgeries were done in collaboration with the Save the Heart Foundation, UK.
A team of Cardiothoracic surgeons from the UK, headed by Dr. Onyekwelu Nzewi teamed with staff of the Federal Medical Center Abuja to carry out the four successful open heart surgeries, the first ever in the facility.

With state of the art facilities procured by the Management of the Hospital, particularly the Heart-Lung Machine, the Intensive Care Unit of officials say the hospital can now carry out as many as 724 open heart surgeries in a year.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, the head of the UK team says the Recent breakthrough would cut medical tourism out of the country, as Nigerians need not travel to get safe cardiac surgery anymore
On its part, the chief medical director of the hospital, Prof Sa’ad Ahmed assures that the open heart surgery programme will continue to run.
The hospital management has also fixed the next round of open heart surgeries, which will target children with special Cardiac surgery for March this year
