Nigerian Government To Take Ownership Of HIV/AIDS Response

The National Agency for the Control of Aids (NACA) says national and state stakeholders should assume great ownership and financing of HIV response in Nigeria.

The Director-General of NACA, Dr. Gambo Aliyu says strong accountability structures along with a multi-sectoral HIV response are needed to monitor the utilisation of funds and ensure they are spent on activities that will continue to have a real impact on people living with HIV/Aids.
He said the agency is grateful for the continued support to the HIV response with the approval for the annual financing of 50,000 additional people on treatment by the Federal Government.

Ope Abegunde, Deputy Director, Resource Mobilisation Department, NACA says there is a need to promote in-country manufacturing of Anti-retroviral drugs and test kits.

He said there is a need to strengthen institutional capacity and governance of Federal and State Government to drive resource mobilization efforts. While adding that leveraging Civil Societies to strengthen accountability mechanisms for the mobilised funds will go a long way.
He says there is need to expand private health insurance coverage for HIV/Aids.
